about

Inspired by the English Civil War, this song is about the alternative outcomes in history, all the what-ifs.

lyrics

I found a butterfly, how it landed in my hands.
I could’ve cut off the wings and spared a neighbor all the same.
Or let it keep em’ on and spare a flurry, could be a good front somewhere.
It’s one less person off a cliff and one more person up in flames.
A coup d’état to gain, a coup d’état in vain.

I’m coming down with a nasty head cold,
What could have been portended, what could have been of the world?
If losers could have won and winners could have lost?
How much would it have earned and how much would it have cost?

I see in paintings of the Gow Lord Protector’s head.
What could have been of England’s fate if war had rendered him dead?
And I can see those great Cavaliers fall by greater Roundheads.
What of the monarchy gone immersed in red?
They were put to bed, no more could be said.

I’m coming down.

I found a butterfly, how it landed in my hands.
I could’ve cut off the wings and spared a neighbor all the same.
Or let it keep em’ on and spare a flurry, could be a good front somewhere.
It’s one less person off a cliff and one more person up in flames.
This butterfly escaped my tether; I have to hope that life can hold together!

I’m coming down with a nasty head cold,
What could have been portended, (I’m coming down) what could have been of the world?
If losers could have won (Together) and winners could have lost? (Oh)
How much would it have earned and how much would it have cost?

From Xerxes’s fight in Eurymedon to Nixon’s run in 1960,
It’s more than paper or plastic, more than fiction’s nonfictions,
I like to take these possibilities and carve them in stone for all to see,
What could have been of Greece’s fate to what of the Bard and his dictions?
Oh please oh please come back to tether, I want to make the life even better.
